How to Reduce Plastic Use In Everyday Life?

Cutting down on plastic in everyday life can be challenging. These tips bring solutions to plastic pollution closer.

How to Reduce Plastic Use In The Kitchen

Did you know there's a plastic waste island floating in the Pacific Ocean that measures 1.6 million square kilometres? Because there is. 500 million tonnes of plastic are produced annually worldwide and while we hope you're using a lovely reusable water bottle, you're probably also trying to think of ways you can reduce plastic at home. The blame obviously lies with the larger cooperations to stop polluting the planet but there are some little things you can do to make a difference each and every day. So, how can we reduce our plastic waste?

One of the easiest ways to cut down on your plastic is to simply shop at the bigger stores and avoid those little express supermarkets that cover literally everything in plastic. Here's a little experiment we tried:

We sent two of our employees to buy the same ingredients for our Sweet Potato Rösti from a small local supermarket chain and a larger supermarket chain. In the bigger stores, you can buy individual ingredients rather than packaged ones. As you can see, the sweet potatoes come without packaging, as do the chillies, the herbs, and the avocados. This quite clearly demonstrates the difference between the smaller and larger stores. So, to start cutting down on your plastic, try venturing out to the larger stores or greengrocers - it's worth the journey.

Tips for Reducing Your Plastic Consumption

Another way you can try to reduce your plastic use is by simply saying "no" more often. You can say "no" to plastic straws, "no" to plastic cutlery, and "no" to any face wash shower gel that comes packed with microbeads. While that might sound quite negative, you can say "yes" every now and then as well by carrying a reusable shopping bag with you wherever you go and always making sure you've got a nice reusable water bottle on hand. These are just a couple of the simple ways we can do things differently in everyday life and potentially have a tremendous long-term impact on the environment.

Difficulties You May Encounter While Reducing Plastic Waste

As well as a general sense of hopelessness when faced with the general state of the world, one of the difficult you might encounter while trying to reduce your plastic waste is lack of access. If you don't live near a large supermarket, for example, you might be stuck buying ingredients that come wrapped in plastic. But is it too late to reduce plastic waste? No. The best way to face this problem is by always being mindful and trying, each and every day. Even if it's something as simple as growing your own herbs to make some Cheesy Pesto Dough Balls. Every little bit helps, Mob.
